Big Bird vs. Sponge Bob

So have you ever watched Sesame Street? Was it a TV show that you remember watching as a child? I'm curious because when I was growing up, we didn't have cable....as in.....it didn't exist. (Yes, I'm old, thanks for reminding me!)

Most of you have grown up with cable/digital satellite in your homes and Nickelodeon has been your network of choice. What differences or similarities do you see between the shows on Nickelodeon and the shows on PBS (like Sesame Street)? Is one better than the other?

Also, I'd like for you to do a little digging and see how Sesame Street has changed. You can find some clues in the article (click on the title of this post!), but you can also ask some of the older people in your life.
Post your comment below.

No, I do not remember Sesame Street, but I do remember the yellow talking sponge (Sponge Bob). My opinion about the differences and similarities between the shows on Nickelodeon and the shows on PBS is a few things. On Nickelodeon I think the shows are for older (5-12 year old) kids, I could be wrong. On PBS I think the shows are for younger (1-4 year old) kids. Here is an story on how much Sesame Street has changed over the years:

Sesame Street: A Lot Has Changed on the Grand-daddy of Kids TV Shows

August 15, 2006 by Jeff D Gorman

A lot has changed on Sesame Street since the classic kids TV show made its debut in 1969. If you tune in today with your kids, you will notice a lot of new characters and segments. Still, almost all of the classic characters and humans are still around, and the show is unparalleled in its ability to teach children.
The old guard includes adult humans Gordon and Susan (married), Luis and Maria (married) and Bob and Linda (just friends). Gordon and Susan have an adopted son named Miles, who is a teen-ager. He pals around with Luis and Maria’s teen-age daughter Gaby. Linda, who uses American Sign Language, has a huge Muppet dog named Barkley.
The classic Muppet characters that are still around include Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Snuffy, Grover, The Count, Cookie Monster, Prairie Dawn and Oscar the Grouch. Kermit the Frog is no longer around, since branched off to The Muppet Show in the 70s.

I remember watching sesame street when i was younger (elmo was one of my favorite characters). I think sesame street compared to the cartoon shows these days (such as spongebob) are pretty different. First of all, as i remember Sesame Street was always educational. There was a letter each episode and you would learn about the letter and words that start with that letter. Nickelodeon shows are not really educational, just there for entertaining puproses. Another things is Sesame Street involved real people (besides the puppets) and good interaction. Nickelodean cartoons are almost all animated. They are similiar in the sense that they bring out the childs imagination while watching the show. I think imagination is important in this day in age when most kids always have what they want in front of them (such as music videos) so when their asked to think of something original they dont have such an easy time.

I think sesame street has changed over the years in the sense that it is continuing to teach kids about helping the environment and eating healthy such as its new go green program and new "veggie monster."

I have to say Spongebob has made its way to the top but in Sesame Street's time that show was the king of kids shows. Now if its just Big Bird against Spongebob then I will have to go with Big Bird for two reasons: 1) Big Bird is and he has been warming kids hearts since they were born. 2) Spongebob is a weird lunatic who runs around going to work and jelly fishing. As Birg Bird teaches kids new words and lives on a great learning street which allows kids to feel that they live right next to Big Bird.

I barely remember watching the show "Sesame Street" as a kid. However i remember perfectly "Spongebob" and other Nickolodeon shows. Both programs are for kids, but i feel as if PBS where Sesame Street is aired, is for younger children who are just learning how to interact and understand. Spongebob is still watched among some middle schoolers! Both shows attract many children.
Sesame Street i see has changed over the years. After reading the article i feel as if Sesame Street is teaching kids about real world issues like "going green" and cookie monster now "eating healthy." I think this show changed to not only entertain kids, however to also teach them real-life stuff too.

I vaguely remember Sesame Street, but I remember Sponge Bob well. A similarity that both shows have are, both shows are targeted towards children, just in different age groups. There is also an apparent difference as well, Sesame Street educates children, while Sponge Bob is usually something entertaining to watch. I feel that if you wish to watch something educational Sesame Street would be the better choice, but if you were to want to watch something amusing, I would recommend Sponge Bob.

How Sesame Street has change over the years (Not full article):

Cookie Monster Changes His Tune

By Chris Hawke

My beloved blue, furry monster — who sang "C is for cookie, that's good enough for me" — is now advocating eating healthy. There's even a new song — "A Cookie Is a Sometimes Food," where Cookie Monster learns there are "anytime" foods and "sometimes" foods.

When I was younger, I watched both Sesame Street and Spongebob, but as of now I vaguely remember Sesame Street, opposed to how i remember Spongebob. From what i remember they were both shows of cartoons to entertain children; but never really taught a lesson or had a moral to the episode. Sesame Street has now made some changes to help children not only be entertained while watching the show, but as they are watching, they are also being taught lessons. Sesame Street now has episodes about the concept of "going green" as well as multiple other important lessons for children to be aware of. If Spongebob made a couple of changes to help teach lessons to children as well, I believe it would be a very beneficial choice to the viewers of Spongebob, as well as the makers.

I do not remember watching sesame street. yes, I remember sponge bob and gary. Big bird is larger than sponge bob and has feathers. While sponge bob is small and lives underwater. They are both yellow and creative.

I do recall watching Sesame Street just barley. Spongebob and Sesame street have been on for very long time and both have had their HIGH points. Nickelodeon I believe is the new PBS. PBS has been on for a very long time and "Nick" or even "Nick JR" although not on as long has began to evolve as a huge childhood TV channel.

Similarites: both Tv shows (Sesame Street & Spongebob) create imagination. As well as teach you lessons about life.

Differences: The differences are that Sesame street's Songs and Characters personalities if you will have changed over time. I think the only reason spongebob hasnt changed as much is because they havent been around as long as PBS.

I remember myself sitting in front of the TV watching Sesame Street when I was very young. Sponge Bob is more like an everyday TV show. Sesame Street is very educational and it is more for toddlers to watch. Also, PBS Kids is an educational channel for smaller kids. Sesame Street has become more into a "GO GREEN" show as they changed Cookie Monster into the Veggie Monster. Sponge Bob is more animated and entertaining. Older age groups usually watch Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon has more animated TV shows. Also, Nickelodeon has shows for entertaining purposes.

Yes, As a kid i always watched "Sesame Street". I never used to watch Sponge Bob , and i still dont. I do not get the point of the show. Since the begginig of "Sesame Street" , the show has changed alot. Instead of the "Cookie Monster " it is now the "Vergie Monster". Also, Sesame Street teaches a lesson to young kids, Sponge Bob does not. Although both shows are entertaining to kids.

I do remember watching the show when i was younger. I always loved to sing along to the Elmo's world song and all that. I think that the difference is that Sesame Street and shows like it used to teach me things, or at least boost my desire to learn. Shows on nickelodeon aren't so much educational, more just comedy and made for the purpose of entertainment and laughs. I think we all know you're not going to learn a life lesson every time you watch an episode of Spongebob. I liked to watch the PBS type shows up until about 3rd grade, and think that I benefited much more from that than I would have spending all my time watching Nick.

Sesame street has definitely changed over the years. I watched it with my cousins in NY recently and was shocked at the different things that have been put on the show just over a few years. For one thing, no more cookie monster. Now it's veggie monster. They've also added a few other characters that I don't remember seeing as a younger kid. They have different sub sections of the show too. They also have the whole going green type thing, and instead of just teaching letters and numbers, kids learn the importance of keeping our world clean.

Yes, I remember watching Sesame Street as a child. I think Sesame Street has changed a lot over the years with it showing children how to eat healthier and save the environment a little more. I think PBS is better for children because the shows on that channel are a little more kid friendly than the shows on Nickelodeon. Some of the shows on Nick are more teen shows than little kids. Sesame Street has changed by teaching kids more stuff about our world and things going on in real-life.

they are both good in different ways like on PBS they do not have any commercials but nickelodeon does. I hate commercials they are ignoring. Also nickelodeon has funnier shows like spongebob and PBS is all kids stuff.
